SSP Celebrates Women’s Day

The United Nations Association of Uganda joined the rest of the world in celebrating the International Women’s day since its vision is to promote the aims and ideals of the United Nations. Celebrations took place at Central College Mityana under the School Service Programme (SSP), to which the host is a member. The celebrations were combined with the global climate change campaign. Participants in this event were members from the secretariat, staff and volunteers, chairperson of the education, health and community service committee of Mityana district, coordinator of UNAU-Mityana branch and the SSP schools which at the time were Kololo, Kalinabiri, Old Kampala and Central College Mityana.

The aim of the occasion was to promote gender equality and empower women; MDG3.There was an essay competition, traditional Kinyarwanda dance and poem, a play, and singing. Also some trees were planted at the school.

The guest speaker who is the headmistress of Central College Mityana appreciated UNAU in addressing gender equality and women empowerment issues. The programme officer stated that protecting the environment is a collective responsibility and should be from the grassroots. This can be done by educating the girl child since they are the mother’s of the nation, she said.
